Recommendation is to use baking soda after 3 or 4 applications. This will clear away any plaque that becomes changed to a form easier for taking away.There is no need to apply so much, a slight smear on your toothbrush should be enough. You could dig some out with the handle and apply to your brush for ease and if sharing your pottle.
